Course Code: READING-6

The Middle School reading program is designed as an intervention to reading instruction course. Every student will have the opportunity to meet high expectations and the necessary individualized support provided to them. Reading instruction will be designed to target students' skill deficits in the areas of basic reading (phonics/word identification) and reading comprehension. Students' reading fluency and accuracy will be addressed, both for oral and silent reading. The middle school team of teachers have specifically designed these classes with appropriate adaptations to the content, methodology, delivery and/or design that address the student’s unique needs, rather than student grade level placement. Teaching strategies will include whole group, small-group, and individualized instruction. Materials will include remedial instructional programs, leveled readers, novels, and technology based blended instruction. Student growth will be monitored throughout the academic year, in order to ensure student progress. Both formal and informal evaluation tools will be utilized to benchmark student progress throughout the year. This course is specifically designed with appropriate adaptations to the content, methodology, delivery and/or design to address students’ individual needs.
